This is good advice. Another thing that might help to minimize the gouging is to check out gasbuddy.com before you fill up. When you need to fill up, gasbuddy.com can help you find the lowest-cost station in the area, and I believe it covers the entire U.S. When I checked it recently, I found the price variance between the highest-cost and the lowest-cost gas station to be more than 27 cents per gallon in the area where I live.

Hi Jenny,
Thanks for your comments. I'm appalled at the cost of gas now, too. I was just in Europe and in the UK gas is around $8.09 a gallon. Isn't that unbelievable? Thats why I get so mad that the US hasn't become energy self sufficient, when we could. You might not remember the gas lines in the 70's. Back then all the politicians were saying we needed to reduce our dependence on foreign oil, but instead of doing it, we're more dependent than ever. The best thing to do is get yourself in a situation where you won't need to drive very often, if you can. Good luck and thanks again!

These are great tips Art! Thank you so much! I was appalled at the cost of gas in my neighborhood - $4.10. And it's only going up. These tips are going to be critical for me to save on gas - that and finding alternate transportation to and from work...

Another way you can save on hot water heating is by replacing your old hot water tank with an "on demand" instant hot water unit. This type of system can be heated by electricity or natural gas.

The system heats the water as it passes the heating element inside the unit. In a conventional type hot water tank, the water sits in the tank all the time, being heated.

The on demand unit can be installed easily and they are inexpensive compared to a hot water tank.
