August 25, 2008

istock_000003155678xsmall.jpgI live in Florida and for most Floridians, the power company is called FPL or Florida Power and Light. Anyway, they sent out an email today that contained a few tips and a survey which will ask you some questions about your power consumption and then respond to you with ways you can cut back and save money. They also have a program where they will lower your bill if you voluntarily sign up for a program where you offer to have your power cut for a short period of time if they ever have excess demand and are short supply.

If you don’t live in Florida, contact your power company and ask them if they have a program similar to FPL’s.

Here are the tips from FPL:

TIPS TO HELP YOU MANAGE YOUR ELECTRIC USAGE
COOL YOUR HOME EFFICIENTLY
In most Florida homes, air conditioning accounts for half or more of the annual electric bill. So, this is the best place to start controlling your own energy consumption.

SAVE UP TO $100 OR MORE EACH YEAR
The FPL On Call® program is the easiest way to save money on your bill. As a participant, you agree to allow FPL to cycle off equipment you select for brief periods of time. This occurs only when absolutely necessary to help us conserve energy during times of very heavy usage. In exchange, we will give you an automatic credit on your electric bill every month—even if we never activate the program. To learn more or enroll, visit www.FPL.com/oncall.
DO YOU KNOW WHAT’S DRIVING YOUR HOME’S ENERGY USAGE?
FPL’s free Online Home Energy Survey is a great way to get a personalized analysis of your home’s energy usage and recommendations to help you make your home more energy efficient. For example, did you know that avoiding pre-rinsing dishes before putting them in the dishwasher can save you up to $70 a year?
